Weaver and Picatinny rings and other mounts for these two types of rails are becoming the most popular mounting solution of today. This trend will most probably continue in the future, at least we presume that it will.

All mounts in this category have in common that they all can be mounted either on Weaver and Picatinny rails or that they can be mounted on only the Picatinny rail. The common rules of what fits where is summarized in the following two lines below:

Will Picatinny rings fit a Weaver base?

  • Picatinny mounts and rings fit only on Picatinny rails.

  • Weaver rings and mounts fit on Weaver and Picatinny rails,

Due to this reason, Picatinny rails are gaining popularity over the Weaver rails, since they can accept all types of mounts, whereas Weaver rails have their limitations.

Can you use Weaver style rings on a Picatinny rail?

When you wish to mount a Weaver mount onto a Picatinny rail you do however have to make sure that the recoil stopper that goes into the slot on the Picatinny rail is leaned to the horizontal wall of the slot in the direction towards the target. In this way the mount seats securely when recoil forces push the rifle backward and when the scope wants to move in the other direction – forward towards the target.

The main benefit of these mounts is their versatility and reliability. Mounts that go on the Picatinny rail are among the toughest mounts produced and no other mounting solution is so widespread.

Even though many Weaver and Picatinny mounts are also made in a quick detachable fashion, only a few of them offer 100% repeatability.
