The field of view on this Midas ranks up there with the very best 10x42 binoculars. In fact, it is even as wide as many 8x42 binoculars. This makes these the perfect choice if you need more power than an 8x instrument, but who also want to maintain a wide view. Eye-relief is sufficient and should be fine for most eyeglass wearers. Overall this is an especially versatile 10x42 binocular and will not only appeal to hunters and wildlife observers but also birders operating at the coast or wide open areas and who need a little more reach and image resolution that what you get with an 8x42.
Apart from a having a more traditional (single closed bridge) roof prism body shape, the Midas series from Athlon is very similar to their Ares, yet is positioned at a lower price point and thus offers a truly excellent price to performance ratio.
Athlon produces four models of the Midas, across two different size categories: The standard and versatile 10x42 and 8x42 models and the larger 10x50 and 12x50 models that excel in low light and longer ranges respectively.
Not only does the tough rubber armour do a good job of protecting the instrument, but it increases grip and is a less shiny, more camouflaged surface. Under the armour is an equally robust, yet comparatively low weight magnesium alloy housing. This is impressive as many will have polycarbonate-plastic shells at this price level.
The Midas is fully sealed and filled with Argon makes them both waterproof and fog-proof. All models also feature twist-up eyecups with multi-position click-stops, a large central focus wheel and a right-eye diopter for exact calibration to your specific eyesight.
Fully multi-coated lenses with ED elements ensure better light transmission for brighter, higher definition images.
However most impressive, especially at this price is that not only are the BaK-4 roof prisms phase corrected but have expensive Dielectric Coatings that further boost light transmission.
Also important to mention are the extra protective coatings added to the outer lens surfaces.
Athlon includes the usual accessories with the Midas: A carry case, neck strap, lens covers, rain guard and cleaning cloth.
As with all their high-end optics, the Athlon Midas comes with a lifetime warranty meaning they will replace them at no cost should they be faulty or get damaged through normal use.
