With features like it’s onboard, in view reticle is no doubt the Vortex Recce Pro HD Monocular is designed with hunters and target shooters in mind, but the fact that it also has a relatively low 8x power, is o-ring-sealed and filled with Argon gas and thus completely fog and waterproof also makes this a good option for boaters and sailors looking for a monocular for marine use.
Basically half a binocular, a monocular like this Vortex Recce may not have quite the same ability when it comes to collecting light, but the advantage is it is far more lightweight and easy to carry. At only 5cm wide, 16cm long and weighing only 213g, there is no denying that this instrument is both small and lightweight.
Whilst the 8x magnification may not be as powerful as that which many hunters are accustomed to using on their binoculars, the advantage here is that you get a much wider field of view in return. So here the emphasis is less on image detail and more on being able to scan large areas looking for targets, which the wide view will certainly help with.
The relatively small 32mm lenses help to maintain the low weight and small size of the monocular, however, the disadvantage of this is that smaller lenses are not able to capture as much light as larger ones.
Once again the lower 8x power also helps in that it ensures that a decent sized 4mm exit pupil is produced. So whilst this will not be the ideal monocular to use in low light, they will deliver a bright, high-quality image in normal daylight conditions.
The 14.5mm of eye-relief is perfectly fine for most users, but should you need or want to wear glasses, this may be a little short to ensure that you are able to maintain a full image without black rings on the edges.
