The 10x42 configuration on this particular Steiner Safari UltraSharp model, along with their quality optical components and coatings combine to make these an extremely versatile binocular that will excel in a wide variety of situations:
Different from the other models in the UltraSharp Adventure Edition series, these Steiner binoculars utilise Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms instead of the Porro prisms used in the others in this series. This gives them a more streamlined and modern looking shape. It also means that you get a centrally located focus wheel and they do not use Steiner’s Sports-Auto-Focus system. The downside to this is that you must adjust the focus depending on the distance of what you are looking at. However, on the positive side, you get a far better minimum focus distance and thus these are more versatile as they enable you to observe things like butterflies or even birds at distances of under 20 meters away.
The reasonably powerful 10x magnification provides you with a good level of image detail even at longer distances and makes them a good choice for use in wide open spaces like on the savannah, at the coast or up in the hills. The perfect uses for this binocular include activities like wildlife observation, hunting and even longer range bird watching.
The limited Adventure edition means that you also get a set of special adhesive overlays which enable you to customise these binoculars to match your particular taste. Some people may opt to keep things simple and maintain the classic look, whilst others may want to add a little flair with the wild leopard pattern or the black & white stripes of a zebra.
